A teacup Chihuahua by itself is such an adorable creature. What if it is crossed with a poodle? Won’t the resulting pups be simply amazing? This is what a Teacup Poodle is. A poodle chihuahua mix is actually a hybrid of a teacup Chihuahua and a poodle. It may also be referred to as Chipoo, Chi poo, Wapoo, Poochi Poo-chi or Choodle.
Like the Chihuahua and the poodle, this poodle chihuahua mix is a small dog although slightly bigger when compared to the purebred Chihuahua. Crossing these two breeds, imbibes the genetic traits of both the breeds. While it has the gentle demeanor of the Chihuahua, it has the stubbornness of the poodle. This makes it a challenge to train a teacup poodle. Maintenance wise, they require the same effort as it would take to maintain a poodle or a Chihuahua.
It must be understood that a hybrid is just a genetically modified dog and does not need any special care or attention. Teacup poodles need constant grooming and baths, thanks to their long furry body. Ticks and fleas may attack them if they are not kept clean. Hence it is advisable to use medicated dog shampoos and conditioners to keep their fur shining bright and clean.
Regular visits to the vet will ensure that your teacup poodle is free from illnesses. Avoid exposure to extreme cold weather conditions as well as the sun for both can be detrimental to the health of your teacup poodle. Teacup poodles are bundles of joy that get the best traits from its parent breeds, the Chihuahua and the poodle.
Personality and Temperament
Chipoos are fun loving, playful dogs that can entertain you for hours with their amusing behaviour. Despite their stubborn streak they are fiercely devoted to their owners and territorial if they feel threatened. It is important that they are socialized as puppies, so that they don't become overprotective. They are friendly companion dogs who like to be fussed over, Chi-poos enjoy the love and attention from their owners and other people, although they may be suspicious of strangers. These teacup dogs are sure to attract attention when you are out and about in the neighbourhood. Although they are highly energetic, they also make good lap dogs.
Exercise and Training Your Chipoo
If you live in the northern hemisphere where the winter weather is cold and snowy you may find your Chipoo prefers to stay indoors. Chipoos dislike cold weather and are definitely more of an indoor dog. As toy dogs, they can get their exercise indoors running from room to room, they are very playful and fast for their size and do not need a lot of long walks. If chipoos are taken outside, they should wear a sweater if the temperature is below 50 degrees. They are intelligent dogs and can be easily trained. Their independent streak means they can be stubborn, but they do respond to positive reinforcement.
Care and Feeding Your Teacup Poodle
High quality food specially formulated for small or toy dogs is recommended. Chipoos are generally light shedders, but they enjoy their owner's attention during the grooming process and it enforces the bond between the two of you, so it is good to groom your dog regularly and trim when needed. A Chipoo should be bathed at least once every two months or as needed. The dog should be brushed before and after bathing to reduce tangles and shedding.
