Chihuahuas were first introduced to America in the late 19th century. American tourists who were visiting Mexico brought some of these dogs back with them on their return to the States. It is from these first specimens, probably being crossed with English Black and Tan Terriers, that the current smooth coat variety was developed and named for Chihuahua, the Mexican State where the breed was discovered.
The Chihuahua was first registered in Canada in 1928.
Teacup chihuauas can make ideal companions. Small enough to fit in an oversized bag, these dogs can accompany you wherever you go. Tiny, with an average height of nine inches and a weight of five pounds, these cute little dogs are sure to draw attention!
The term teacup chihuahua is used to describe a very small chihuahua and is not a particular breed of chihuahua. This terminology became popular in the 90s and is still going strong today! The demand for teacup chihuahuas has driven up the price for these tiny dogs encouraging breeders to breed smaller and smaller dogs. You may hear breeders use a variety of names to describe these tiny dogs none of which are recognised by the American Kennel Club.

Unfortunately, these tiny chihuahuas are more susceptible to health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, hypoglycemia, patellar luxation, bone fractures and joint problems. Owning one requires you to invest your time, money and energy to keep them healthy. Regular visits to the vet are a must! These are very delicate dogs that can easily be injured. You need to be very gentle and careful when handling these miniature dogs. Rough handling and accidental mishaps can lead to bone fractures.
Teacup Chihuahua Dogs
Chihuahuas come in two coat varieties, long and short. The ones with short coats require very little grooming but they do tend to shed more than the long hair chihuahua. The long haired chihuahua requires daily brushing to detangle the hair and keep them looking their best. As the chiwawa is such a small dog this is not an overwhelming task and lets you bond with your dog while they enjoy all your attention. Teacup chihuahuas come in a variety of colours including black, white, tan, brown and beige or any combination thereof. Always active and alert, with their ears cocked and tail curled proudly, who can resist these adorable dogs.

Chihuahuas, because of their size can be the perfect pet for people living in apartments and/or condo buildings. Although very active, they do not need a great deal of exercise so they don't necessarily need a great big back yard to play in. However, chiwawas are known for excessive barking so you will have to be careful not to upset your neighbours!
Teacup Chihuahuas, because they are so diminutive in size, are not recommended for families where there are young children. They can be physically overwhelmed by rough play and can inadvertently be injured or they may become aggressive and bite. Teacup Chihuahuas are better owned by adults who can protect them from harm.

Teacup chihuahuas are highly intelligent and do respond to training as long as it is consistent, gentle but firm. It is important to let them know who is in charge from the very beginning otherwise they will be spoiled, display unacceptable behaviour, and quickly come to rule the roost!

Your puppy should come with a health guarantee, it is also a good idea to have your local veterinarian check it over too. These tiny dogs are susceptible to numerous health issues including dental problems, eye disorders, and breathing difficulties as well as more technical diseases common to small breeds. The life expectancy of a healthy, happy teacup chihuahua is between 10 and 20 years so it is possible to have a loyal, affectionate companion for a good number of years.
